Problem selecting objects

i'm new illustrator user, i'm having problem doesn't make sense me.  cannot select object without moving it. 

 

steps recreate problem:

1. create new document in illustrator
2. draw 2 rectangles
3. choose "selection tool (v)"
4. click , release left mouse button on rectangle not selected

 

at point, not indicate rectangle selected.  if not move mouse, stays that. 

 

however, move mouse ~10 pixels, rectangle selected , moving mouse.  half second later (or so), object automatically dropped.

 

it acts though mouse button "stuck".  i've reproduced on-board trackpad , external mouse.  "direct selection tool" causes same symptoms.  however, have not seen other functions don't work expected.

 

this on latest-generation macbook pro running mountain lion.  other cs product i've been using dreamweaver, , haven't noticed problems there.

 

i've called adobe tech support , got far deleting preferences.  (which didn't seem affect issue)  however, disconnected twice (with no call either time) , after > 15 minutes on hold third attempt, i'm pretty frustrated.

after searching through these forums more, found suggest fixed problem.  i'm adding solution here in hopes else finds it.

 

the culprit right zoom.  adding illustrator exclusion list seemed resolve issue.
