Thread: gdm freezes after login

hello list,

after logging ubuntu (lucid), system freezes. whole screen white colored or loads background image, doesn't show items on desktop , panel. doesn't react on commands [alt]+[f2].

switching terminal [ctrl]+[alt]+[f1] possible. ran command
code:
top
which shows cpu usage of gnome-panel around 100% whole time.

reinstalled gdm many times, didn't have effect. changing settings command
code:
gdmsetup
didn't have effect.

didn't find similar post in forum, can me? have experiences such problems?

thank in advance!

first, has nothing gdm @ all, instead 1 of these apps crashing reason:
- "gnome-panel": missing panels; affects alt+f2, feature of it
- "nautilus": missing desktop items, or white background

both of (not white background, though) randomly happened me on lucid earlier when didn't have option in "screen" section of "/etc/x11/xorg.conf" proprietary nvidia driver:
code:
option "addargbglxvisuals" "true"
it may general issue video driver running.

, if running natty 11.04, there seem issues regarding handling of desktop nautilus.

also, possibly further clues, check log file "~/.xsession-errors".

hope helps!
