Thread: Migrating / to new partition
hi all. i've tried searching question found no answer reasonably current, nor seemed fit exact circumstances, here goes.
i'm running ubuntu 10.04 exclusively. until system had / , /home on separate partitions on same physical drive, i've installed new, larger drive , migrated /home on it. has freed whole bunch of space on primary drive, i'd repartition accommodate few other operating systems want play around (other linux distros, , forth).
include reinstalling windows xp. being windows, likes installed on first primary partition on first drive - position ubuntu in. know linux doesn't care it's installed, i'd know if it's easy matter migrate ubuntu install partition without rendering unusable.
based on experience migrating non-root partitions in past (e.g. /home), educated guess procedure should work this:
- create new, empty ext4 partition (say, /dev/sda2) alongside existing 1 containing / (/dev/sda1)
- copy sda1 --> sda2
- update /etc/fstab new location /
- install windows sda1
- boot sda2 , restore grub
i'm not going rush right this, of course. thinking sound? there obvious steps i've missed? there recent howto of kind address accurately?
many thanks!
edit: - deleted previous comment - didn't read wrote enough - thought you'd forgotten fixing mbr , restoring grub.
