Thread: Multipurpose web file server

after endless hours of inconclusive searching, still haven't found answer looking for. me , friend trying set file server, accessible on internet computers, game consoles. found countless articles explaining web servers, that's not want.

plan old desktop, load hard drives, running ubuntu server edition. part seems pretty solid. haven't been able find, straight forward way it. i'll honest, new in whole setting part, except oodles of terminology computer science class (i know lan/wan, differences of switch/hub/bus, topologies, concepts, etc).

know far when boot server, asks name, ip, etc, don't know if there guidelines (well, of course there are, but,) on how name, can or cant do, etc.

next, wondering pieces of hardware need besides server, switch, cables, wireless router (already have, comes internet connection). trying minimize cost, buying server myself. also, what's impossible find physical layout of make way (attached router, etc).

server nothing more normal computer provides services other computers. hardware side of things need connect server router, normal pc.

on software side need tell router connections specific port should passed on server. if web server , running use webdav (file system on http) share files.

may not secure/fastest solution it's not hard setup.
