Thread: Something's gone awry at install-land
i have friend has netbook. hp mini. comes windows starter edition. can't stand windows. installed ubuntu 11.04 classic gnome interface. working it became apparent thumbs lazy , typed thumbs touch touchpad making mouse cursor jump other places. needless annoying. looked how resolve this, appears there issues hp netbooks (at least hp pro). anyway, appear solutions issue resolved touch pad patch.
after reading web pages there appeared option in kubuntu allowed specify touchpad turned off type. 2 seconds after stop pressing key supposed turn trackpad on.
choice @ point install kubuntu-desktop. 90% though received warnings there issue crypt , file system. computer locked. had force off. ssh box refused (whereas earlier working find)--meaning service wasn't responding--hence know computer locked.
after rebooting when attemping boot linux grub command. no menus, nothing. don't have forever work through these problems. so, decided boot live-cd find more difficulty in having see wubi install (obviously, using virtual file system). choice @ point start install on time going install full verison along side windows. problem there's limit on number of partitions on device (limited 4) , hp mini partition structure put in place hp utilized 4.
went looking solution find had found answer similar problem (of limit of 4 partitions) except didn't explain how solved it. after request did fill in detail on how did it. chose not go route, instead going wubi install.
downloaded wubi, executed it, selected max disk space, , kubuntu install type. gave necessary passwords , let continue. seemed go well, except when did desktop there horribly aweful looking , less easy use version of unity kubuntu. found couldn't locate terminal in order execute commands. far easy confuse me. concluded not fit friend. @ point logged out hoping there kubuntu classic option. there wasn't. looked through system settings. nothing see permit me switch normal plasma desktop folder view.
@ point decided uninstall ubuntu via wubi , reinstall again flat out ubuntu install because know has option classic gnome.
can see had many problems , tells me whatever changes philosophical ideas implementation have gone awry. isn't right. users being corralled using might not nor want.
so, recap:
1) mouse trackpad issue leads locating software turn off during time keyboard being used in effort keep mouse jumping on place.
2) software doesn't appear function , further investigation leads references kde apparently has option under input devices , hardware turn off touchpad while typing, kubuntu-desktop installed (or rather attempt), resulted in hard lock of computer , subsequent reboot gave grub prompt @ boot. find command didn't work, btw.
3) force remove old install , reinstall ubuntu time kubuntu default desktop resulted in horribly awful unity interface. ease of use features sorely lacking, confusing, basic obvious features missing, , deemed non-functional desktop (to me).
4) reinstall of ubuntu desktop classic gnome.
annoying , nice if address these issues, such how default grub, why kubuntu-desktop warned , locked, how default desktop version of folder view of kde without having reinstall whole thing, etc.
frustration level high on one. appreciated , thank in advance.
