Incorrect PDF being displayed periodically in the browser

i want start thanking shed light on problem. 

 

we have web application dynamically generates pdf files per user request in web application.  98% of time proper pdf gets opened in browser correctly, whether ie or firefox.  other 2% of time, no matter url data requested from, incorrect pdf displayed.  incorrect pdf gets displayed 1 requested , opened in previous request , still open in browser tab.  once state reached pdfs requested not line requested pdf, meaning incorrect.  once browser refreshed problem stops happening stretch of time. 

 

i have read posts discuss placing random number in url "trick" browser plugin thinking has pdf.  have done that.  in fact issue appears not impacted @ url.  example, when problem happens can go https://appname/one/pdf , pdf requested , sent when went https://appname/two/pdf.  these 2 different urls without random number placed on end parameter , still receive pdf second url. 

 

we debugged server side code , 100% sure sending correct pdf client streaming pdf file on server prior sending client. 

 

one thing have noticed not specifying content-disposition header when return pdf browser.  means there no filename being provided front end , plugin.  possible adobe reader plugin gets confused file display if there no specific file name provided pdf server, keyword there being intermittent problem? 

 

we can set content-disposition header attachment; filename="somename.pdf" given intermittent nature of bug feedback if fix logical given issue.  if not logical appreciate other information may troubleshoot issue.  alternative rewrite document generation code output html, , not want that. 

 

we using adobe acrobat 9.4.5.236 add-on firefox 10.0.3, adobe reader 9.4.0, , internet explorer 8.0.6001.18702.  of these versions not able upgraded, meaning baseline have support.  operate, still, on window xp professional service pack 3. 

 

one last comment, client side operations user not valid solutions either.  have suggested asking user uncheck open in browser option in adobe reader our customer not find valid solution.  date have not been able recreate issue when pdf opened in adobe reader proper , not browser.

this not have ever heard of, have never written application generates pdf documents.

 

if think problem caused on client side (the browser and/or reader plugin), , nothing can changed on client side, solution can change on server side code, e.g. suggested content-disposition header.
