Thread: Laptop recommendation

hi!

have done research buy laptop, offer varied have hard time deciding.

first: right time buy laptop, or there new generation around corner, current laptops cheaper?

using for
- programming
- surfing internet
- reading
- occasional movie

heavy multitasker want can handle typical session.
(30 tabs in firefox, session of eclipse,
few vim instances, pidgin, music/movie player and
openoffice instance in background common.

i'd run vm, not many apps.)

upgrade memory after purchase, preloaded capacity not deciding factor.

want:
- linux compatibility, of course
- capable processor fast compilation & handle multitasking (virtualization extensions great)
- better keyboard (generally, nice have numpad, place rest of keyboard off-center, don't want one)
- nice screen (color-wise , [not super-duper] viewing angles)
- satisfactory touchpad (i don't plan buy mouse)
- low heat generation
- if can handle 1080 hd & kde's desktop effects, integrated video card enough
- 250gb of hard-drive space
- hdmi , vga ports (s-video nice), 3 or more usb ports (one usb 3.0 awesome), ethernet port, dvd writer
- enough speakers
- wireless b/g/n
- webcam , mic nice have, used
- long battery life is, of course, nice have, don't plan carry around much

price tag: under $500

thank you!

in our family use toshiba. pretty works out of box, exception of mic webcam on satellite although on daughters works fine. battery life rubbish think @ price....
