Thread: Performance drop off over time + high memory usage
hi
bit of subtle problem i've got ubuntu on laptop - it's been present since installing 10, , remains 11. i've tinkered , fiddled , played around it, no avail, hoping can give me steer improve things.
using ancient ibm t41 intel 1.7ghz, 512mb ram, , ati card. when had xp performance pretty constant on given period.
on ubuntu, however, performance degrades on course of several hours - runs beautifully @ start in morning, after 4 or 5 hours it's chain has fallen off.
example, if have laptop on day, want listen internet radio or music library in evening, have restart - otherwise banshee won't play smoothly. jittering, repeating 1/2 second bits of music (sometimes 60 seconds or more). problem worse if have put laptop hibernate @ point.
gets bad machine hangs. start running again, can take 20 minutes or more sort out.
1 thing i've noticed when trying figure out why happening system monitor reports typical memory usage of 84% @ idle! example, right now, 5 tabs in firefox open, thunderbird, , system monitor it's showing 88.8% usage. on xp rare exceed 75% unless playing games. cpu usage broadly similar xp under conditions - 30% right now, spiking 60% when flicking between programs.
other point on memory usage remains entirely stable - i.e. between 84 , 92% under conditions.
seems simple mind system isn't using ram efficiently, or caching badly (hence restart restoring performance).
programs appear make worse banshee (much worse), if open banshee , connect radio stream, performance noticeably drops off when changing tabs on firefox, or swapping thunderbird firefox - memory usage remains @ 85%
confused!
in advance or guidance
