my suggestion 2.5.
make manual backup of files , database ... transfer localhost (xampp localhost http://www.apachefriends.org ). can update on localhost , not worry if update fails because can keep trying on localhost. once have updated can work on upgrading site.
there several extensions available upgrading. ... after transfering site localhost used http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... port/12816 export articles , users. when select section exports associated categories , articles , creates sections/categories categories/sub categories.
i installed joomla 2.5(without sample data) , imported data http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... tion/15807.
this gave me clean 2.5 original sections, categories , users. 1.5 sections , categories became nested categories in 2.5. keeping structure intact.
all needed done create menus, find extensions , template. care must taken finding template because free template suppliers have hacked templates.
