GREP with multiple instances close to one another

i'm having trouble grep outside of basics. using grep apply text styles paragraph. text has been provided me way:

 

the colors starts <ital>black<ital> , gradually progresses <ital>white<ital>.

 

i'm using this: (<ital>).+(<ital>), works fine in circumstances. fails on above example, because italicizes "and gradually progresses to", don't want.

 

can kind point me in direction of explanation of i'm doing wrong here?

i unable follow you're doing. can post screen shots or simplify you're doing?

 

you mean text comes "<ital>black<ital>" in text.

 

so want make "black" italics? or trying else?
