Thread: LVM mysteries in Ubuntu

hi, need answering questions lvm:

had hard drive failure, , had reload system scratch. decided use lvm (for first time) when reloaded lucid. used alternate install cd install 10.04 lvm, using defaults. works fine, , since have done enough research on lvm understand structure overall. installation this: single 250gb hd small boot partition , rest of disk extended partition 250gb lvm2 physical volume.

i leave way , not think anymore it, but the hard drive failure made me serious backing things , partitioning hard drive.

in old scheme, have set separate home partition during installation easy backup pointing backup program @ home directory's /dev name, lvm has many more components such process becomes more murky. part of problem during installation did not know know lvm , blindly accepted defaults setting lvm, , consequence, have single large lv holds everything. want have /home directory on separate lv can backed itself, able before installing lvm. under old way, handle partition management booting handy linux system rescue cd , use partitioning tool resize or create/delete partitions.

given here questions having hard time answering:

1) how can break new lv off of /dev/ubuntu/root lv /home data?

2) how make external backups of data organized logical volumes?

3) standard rescue cd partitioning tools apply working lvm partitions/volume groups/logical volumes?

helping these questions.
