Thread: interesting ubuntu server problem

hi guys, hoping can me unique problem.

acquired rather new laptop busted screen. compaq presario laptop, , lid flimsy enough accidentally bend , crack lcd, , blur. instead of replacing screen (which may end doing eventually), though useful use laptop ubuntu server, since has 250 gb hard drive , enough memory, , stuff. server, not need working screen, because communication on ssh anyway. external monitor port work, , can use computer way, have found getting laptop point external video port activated requires operating system loaded , running degree, requires input @ startup, such entering password (or hitting function key boot cd), impossible know when because screen technicolor blur.

first rather clever way of getting around take hard drive out, put laptop , load ubuntu server onto disk , putting disk gimpy laptop. gimpy laptop runs , boots ubuntu server automatically point external monitor activates.

problem solved, right? not fast.

although can interact through external monitor, ethernet port dead. when installed ubuntu server on disk, (while in other laptop), did give ethernet address consistent network, , enabled openssh. hd in gimpy laptop, ran ifconfig , interface showed lo interface. running lshw shows ethernet controller, physical address of 0, there. have tried assign network address ifconfig command, keeps telling me device not present ("etho: error fetching interface information: device not found"). trying restart networking gives me similar results. guess because installed os while hd in different laptop, installation program detected different ethernet card , installed different driver t hat 1 in busted laptop.

so.....how networking working, without being able use ethernet connection right module?

can please verify 2 laptops 100% same ?
if not explaine problem .
