Thread: Re-scanning SCSI-like devices?
i have uncommon situation involving ubuntu machine (10.04) , scsi-like device connected via fibre channel. connected device removable , can have power applied or removed separate ubuntu machine , can have either or both of 2 disk-like devices (which typically show /dev/sdc , /dev/sdd) present or removed. can occur @ time.
when using ubuntu 8.04, applying power device (while ubuntu running) caused, after few seconds, os detect 2 devices /dev/sdc , /dev/sdd, bringing same dialog box appear when inserting usb device. and, when power cycled on scsi-like device, same thing occur. without having reboot ubuntu in order rescan device; somehow ubuntu figured out , did right thing.
however, in migrating ubuntu 10.04, behavior no longer observed. if, example, if ubuntu machine has completed booting , in quiescent state, applying power scsi-like device not cause ubuntu 10.04 recognize new device available version 8.04 did in past.
causes have reboot ubuntu machine in hopes on reboot detect device. successful, seems big hammer small problem didn't exist in 8.04. there way force os rescan devices on bootup?
note: have tried rescan_scsi_bus.sh no apparent effect,
echo “- – -” > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan
no success. there way cause kernel device selection logic re-executed without having reboot? in case, if takes machine down few seconds acceptable workaround.
