What is the algorithm for Outer Glow "Softer"?


i'm trying implement effects in c++ user interface controls. i've figured out photoshop layer styles uses anti-aliased form of euclidean distance transform "precise" techniques (inner glow , outer glow).

 

but method used "softer" technique outer glow , inner glow? seems used "smooth" technique when computing height map bevel , emboss.

 

any pointers appreciated!
