Save a modem - eat a… well, use better compression
hello there ^^
i've seen several threads in these forums people complain downloads creative suite installer , such take long time (due size), fail, etc.
indeed, downloaded today designstandard_cs6_ls6.7z file adobe's public ftp : that's 5.5 gb file, , took me several hours.
as stated somewhere around trial download , install faq, adobe using .7z files because these provide better compression ratio plain old .zip, true, , approve of choice various reasons.
however, i've been performing few tests and, well, seems can better, i'll explain below.
the current archive, appears, uses 64 mb lzma dictionary.
today (or more tonight point of view), i've extracted archive directory, , created archive, still using 7-zip (9.22 beta) lzma method, dictionary size of 512 mb — requires 64 bit os since archiving process alone need 5.5 gb of ram.
and, result ? well, ladies , gentlemen, nice 3.27 gb archive, works fine original install launcher !
no mistake here, 3,521,580,284 bytes instead of 5,918,710,777 : that's 40% better.
i checked contents both generating hashes original extracted files , confronting them extracted files 'my' archive, , installing evaluation version modified source (substituting .7z file) in windows xp virtual machine (with 1 gb ram itself), without error output.
of course, require around 520 mb ram initial extraction instead of original ~70 mb, considering system requirements of creative suite itself, shouldn't issue end users, unless machine isn't qualified run software anyway.
so, whoever responsible packaging these files distribution : can please consider idea of using better compression method ? save bandwidth (and time) :}
everyday work here on forum , elsewhere proves people trying run software on toasters , therefore focus must on providing reliable (well, not counting other ada/ aam/ installer issues) experience rather geeking out on few megabytes saved. includes performance , stability considerations well. yeah, sure, in ideal world none of problem, near there. anyway, it's not relevant @ all. not before long there wil lbe streaming installers or ones can handle separate sub-packages , pulled in cloud needed silent installs, nobody wil lever notice...
