Thread: Questions about going from C# and WinForms to other languages/GUIs

know c#.net, though wouldn't consider myself advanced programmer. maybe intermediate. i've been wanting branch out c++ and/or java, i'm lost find tutorials or references. pages i've seen on c++ teach basics @ start, leaves me kind of bored. doesn't have motivation , attention span issues...

i've looked javascript , html5. see, have game wrote in c# class in 2005. uses winforms , gdi+. it's still in stage, haven't worked on since class. switched linux in 2006, that's been main issue. monodevelop doesn't seem have winforms designer, limits me on how can alter game.

use kde, , there doesn't seem optimal qt binding mono. not know how use that. have no idea start learning gtk or qt or of other graphics libraries. winforms know. don't know differences are.

guess, in end, reason i'm considering c++ because of lack of qt support in mono. if somehow manage port c# game qt without having change languages, i'd happy. don't know how port winforms qt, , don't know if of bindings par.

still learn java , javascript/html5. started going through w3schools javascript tutorial, , seems okay. of concepts. sticking point how take two-dimensional array , figure out how implement in javascript without having giant mess.

sorry rambling, nonsensical post. hope can make sense of , me out.

i'd head toward java now, uis cross boundraries mention. games going want @ opengl, games out of element, can't speak authoritatively on that.

in terms of java, advice, download eclipse, , start trying write java program. google best book there is, if have syntax questions. if decent c# (or vb) learning java on own won;t hard. once can code, picking new langague isn't hard, when closely related .net , java.

imo, javascript ugly langague, , i've never found satisfactory tools working it. i'm 1 of .net devs hear being dismayed ms heading toward html5, since latest greatest buzz platform. lately i've made career goal learn me android. time mobile under belt.
