Thread: Ubuntu couldn't install Grub

i installed win7. wanted install ubuntu drive. chose third option things manually, couldn't change hard drive in first option. (keeping windows , installing ubuntu) made root , swap partiton ubuntu. installer asked me set location of bootloader, chose 1 "windows loader" in it. installer accepted , proceeded installation. before finished, threw error saying couldn't install grub place i've set. dialog allowed me choose drives, still failed. choose not install grub, dialog stayed there , did nothing. (bug probably) had restart pc.

i'm here working windows, , ubuntu without grub. in advance.

when have ubuntu on separate disk, should install grub mbr of disk windows disk untouched. recommend disconnecting windows disk during install avoid confusion installer.

no problem. need boot live cd/usb , install grub. after booing,
1) run disk utility in system/admin , see drive name of ubuntu disk. /dev/sdb , windows disk /dev/sda. confirm number of ubuntu root partition, sdb1.

2) install grub ubuntu disk. in terminal (assuming disk /dev/sdb , root partition sdb1):
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdb

if there no other errors should able boot ubuntu disk telling bios boot first. once booted, need run command update grub's boot menu:
sudo update-grub

try that.
