Thread: Botched Removal of Encrypted Home Folder

i followed instructions here after searching around regarding removing encryption of home folder. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/en...ivatedirectory

here followed specifically:

perhaps encrypted private directory not you. remove setup:

ensure have moved relevant data out of ~/private directory
unmount encrypted private directory
code:
$ ecryptfs-umount-private
make ~/private writable again
code:
$ chmod 700 ~/private
remove ~/private, ~/.private, ~/.ecryptfs (note: permanent)
code:
$ rm -rf ~/private ~/.private ~/.ecryptfs
uninstall utilities
code:
 $ sudo apt-get remove ecryptfs-utils libecryptfs0
well didn't have ~/private directory, forged on ahead nonetheless. after completing these steps, rebooted , confronted several errors, 1 along lines of
not being able read .ice in /home/nick/ , nautilus complained no home directory existed, , there 1 more error can't quite remember. rebooted again after googling these errors , not finding relevant decryption / encryption, , desktop restored working order. had wireless drivers , normal background, instead of normal contents of home folder, had base template home folders ('documents', 'music', etc..) no file contents @ all.

tried manually recover home folder following other instructions on same page posted, unwrap passphrase , use fnek decrypt folder linux partition (i tried using livecd), afterwards trying read or copy files in mounted directory did not work @ all. in fact, first times try access files via 'ls', computer reverted tty-ish looking screen talking how stacks couldn't read or something, , after going interface via ctrl+alt+f7, ls command hanging. tried doing recursive copying supposed decrypted home folder, hung well..

anyway, afraid can't access home folder documents anymore. recall not using fnek option once when tried mount decrypted home folder , got bunch of encrypted folders, didn't me. given directions have paid off others simplying trying read unadulterated home folder partion not work me fear, attempted remove encryption , instead screwed stuff up.

can me?

p.s. followed instructions on 'removing' decryption ubuntu page, mildly disappointed ubuntu offers option encrypt home directory upon installation, seemed nice @ time, no formal way (or @ least, looks like, no way doesn't destroy home folder) remove decryption. annoyed couldn't read home folder data other o.s.s. that's beside point, home folder can't read os

hi, anytime remove command used can dangerous, did remove data first mentioned in case of problem have data in folder or on anther drive?
