Thread: First time user on an HP nc8000

hello

while ago decided sick of old laptop sitting around wasting space , collecting dust. put ubuntu 10.10 on install went fine , worked straight after install except wireless, discuss later. laptop hung randomly, in no response keyboard, touchpad, or numlock key. told should not happen on linux, put down laptop's hardware doing shouldn't.

after 2 days of use, though, sick of these hangs , remembered dad downloaded 10.04 other day, reformatted , put on instead. time there no lockups, wireless still not work. driver loaded fine not connect home network, kept telling me bad password. after 2 days of googling, trying use wicd, , avoiding ndiswrapper moss on sandwich, figured out how madwifi-ng installed , running, fixed wireless fine. issue had resuming suspend state, keep asking me wireless password though sure correct. fixed little script have forgotten - unloaded , loaded ath_pci when resumed suspend.

read recompiling linux kernel specific optimizations pentium m processor laptop has, , decided wanted take shot @ that. followed this guide, , first used make localmodconfig , make menuconfig find stuff didn't need take out , select optimizations etc. long story short worked first time, first time did didn't include sound drivers, second time didn't include usb mass storage drivers, , today realised left out iso9660 support (or that, in other words cds don't mount), recompiled again evening. i'm quite proud haven't been using linux month yet , i've compiled own kernel 3 times

brings me main point of thread: evening when recompiled made sure iso9660 included in kernel config, whenever insert cd drive this:
code:
error mounting: mount: block device /dev/sr0 write-protected, mounting read-only mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error in cases useful info found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
i don't know now.

second thing brings me here battery life rather abysmal on laptop, granted don't use main battery because it's dead , secondary travel battery use several years old, i'm quite sure windows xp lasted longer ubuntu does. more or less 2 hours on battery while doing nothing - letting sit there. cpu governor set ondemand , scale down normal 1.7ghz 600mhz fine. have disabled bluetooth on startup , can enable wish, doesn't use power. i've removed lots of applications won't need. have laptop-mode-tools installed, too, haven't seen improvement that. it's quite funny though, ubuntu tells me have more or less hour of life remaining @ full charge, when reported charge 0% can still use laptop hour depending on do.

issue have, it's less of issue , more of annoyance, whenever boot black screen blinking "_" cursor @ top left corner of screen 15 seconds (after comes ubuntu loading screen , login box), , entire time hard drive indicator solidly lit. according forum posted boot.log after booting happening on /dev/sda5 15 seconds, , sda5 swap partition got put there when installed ubuntu, redirected me here apparently guys might have more knowledge on this. seem have bit of issue gnome-system-monitor. on processes tab eats steady 20% cpu, , on resources tab takes 40-50% cpu, , that's interval set 5 seconds. did googling , found bugreport on it, , i'm wondering if conclusion has been made or if there can avoid getting cpu munched. rythmbox seems using 5-7% cpu seems little high such small media player, , i'm playing mp3s. pulse-audio takes 10% @ same time rythmbox.

last thing came here ask whether it's possible use fglrx radeon 9600 in laptop ubuntu 10.04. did sudo apt-get install fglrx , installed fine told me no compatible hardware detected, , found last release support 9600 catalyst 9.4 or 8.4 or that. heard that release doesn't support version of x.org 10.04 uses, correct? or there way of getting driver on here? otherwise enjoying ubuntu, love having freedom of looking through free software can download , love how can pretty whatever want on here. it's given me excuse stay @ night talking people on pidgin

oh! didn't mention specs: 1.7ghz pentium m, 1gb ram, radeon 9600 (i think 64mb), , wireless card atheros 5000 series chip (can't remember exact model).

bump.

if case of tl;dr, then:

  • i'm loving ubuntu
  • cds won't mount
  • ath5k kept asking me wireless password, madwifi fixed it
  • battery life kinda sucks
  • on boot there 15 second long black screen blinking cursor @ top left corner of screen
  • gnome system monitor uses ~40% cpu depending on tab i'm viewing.

did reading on fglrx, , see can't use 9600 because last version supports 9600 isn't compatible current kernel. nevermind part.
