have been running ubuntu number of years, yet still no expert (as know, former drip under high pressure!) , not familiar how out of computer in linux.

know linux runs on scripts, , these can edited in simple test editor,

have licensed copy of windows xp professional before time dived linux , settled on ubuntu 6.06 @ time.

if have problem on windows computer, can run hijackthis , generate log of processes running on system, submit forum, , suggestions on how proceed.

don't know layout of linux windows:

operating system in typically windows folder, programs install program files folder, , home in ridiculously long file path called "documents , settings" (/home in linux). there %environment% variables in windows tell software program files folder is, , find os , find active user's home account.

know folders , directories 1 , same in both operating systems, , familiar directory hierarchy of filesystem. have worked radio shack color computer 2, , ms-dos since given 8088 processor-based computer.

question is, if want ask , submit equivalent of hijackthis log, built right in ubuntu os, start?

before got linux, on hard drive, , drive c partition on "this" physical drive...... "/"? of course, know answer question! in whatever partition chose @ time of installation if made choice, sure had me buffaloed long time!

want seek assistance on how go speeding things up, getting rid of bottleneck exists because script waiting on doesn't exist or slow respond whatever reason, being resource hog or whatever.

in windows, can open properties on icon and, want find different icon, can select icon , see dll file or exe file or standalone ico file providing current icon, , can navigate around filesystem find different one. in ubuntu, opened user home folder no clue present icon found, if change it, don't know go find original.

in windows can open "open with..." dialog puts me in program files, in ubuntu put in user home folder icon search.

since don't know way around should, have not clue begin.

i'm not trying windows better ubuntu, there common-sense things done there wish carried on here, because linux more secure operating system.

instance, if open email in windows, script can run without consent, here have give windows executables permission under wine execute setting permission flag.

in may of 2011, downloaded video chat program oovoo.com called oovoo, , ran on windows computer. installed on system , presented me eula read, , did not agree to. exited installer using x in corner of window, , came sign-in window. closed it, , went add/remove software in control panel, , first removed oovoo toolbar. came internet explorer new home page license terms said must accept if blow away toolbar. closed , blew away program , cleaned registry, restarted windows. presented fact admin password changed without authorization, , not restart windows. have project due tomorrow, had pay friend $50 computer in order. used linux-based scripts blow away windows password , had disable system restore , clean bunch of stuff. next day had computer in time me project.

sorry long post, , thank reading far! basically, submit in form of log let review system , give suggestions? tutorial links may me better understand lay of land? hoping thread may useful others new ubuntu.

hi, starters can open log file viewer , see logs self, takes lot of looking , studying logs understand going on. if post log please post outcome here clicking on new reply , click # , paste information between brackets.
