Thread: Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on AMD64 Mobile Slower than 32 bit?
i have compaq cq62 laptop 2.8 ghz amd64 phenom ii x2 dual core cpu.
i'm running ubuntu 10.04.2 lts 64 bit. best release of ubuntu ever, imho.
however, i've noted pattern amd64 cpu's on ubuntu 10.x , 11.x 64 bit, benchmarks geekbench:
32 bit integer performance on these cpus lower in geekbench on 64 bit ubuntu, , 64 bit floating point performance faster on 32 bit. it's kind of disappointing.
i'd expect higher all-around scores 64 bit ubuntu. don't. instead, they're 12% lower 32 bit ubuntu.
maybe has way amd64 cpu's handle ia32 libs?
intel cpus, core 2 duos i5's , i7's seem show 64-bit 15 - 20% improvement on 32-bit, geekbench.
here screen scrape of system running geekbench on ubuntu, running 32- , 64 bit versions of benchmark:
64-bit geekbench running on ubuntu 10.04.2 64-bit on left side, 32-bit geekbench running on ubuntu 10.04.2 64-bit on right.
http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench.../414230/431625
figure 64 bit results somewhere around 4,250 ~4,300.
it's bad ubuntu can't roll single, fast 64-bit kernel amd64 cpu's takes fast fpu performance 32-bit kernel, , fast integer performance 64-bit kernel.
1 more item: explicitly set out install amd64 iso / kernel.
when # uname -a , why see "generic" kernel, instead of amd64?
