signal-to-noise ratio? (video encoding comparison)

if encode video in adobe media encoder or adobe after effects, there way, either in 1 of programs or plug-in or cheap/free utility see sort of "signal noise ratio" value (a single value) encoded video compared original?

i'm not totally sure it's right term want tells me how close particular encoded video original source video.  eg. let me know if, because of artefacts/noise introduced eg. because gave low bitrate or other parameters  1 encode unlike original source video, , tell video identical or identical source (eg. no compression artefacts or other differences original introduced).

i'm looking give me single numerical value video compared video - ie. encoded video compared original (signal-to-noise ratio?).

there method i've heard of never tried.  guess put 2 clips in same sequence in pp, 1 atop other, , apply difference matte top one.
