Thread: Panel autohide breaks taskbar in 11.04
ubuntu 11.04 running on asus x58c.
defect:
when setting panel autohide, after moving bottom of screen, found not hidden persisted flickering line of few pixels height.
functionality of task bar broken. clicking not launch applications , there no way access applications/places/systems. since nothing launched, system broken. although possible change gconf settings using gconf-editor, of no use if cannot launch terminal. not possible use alt-f2 access terminal session.
fix:
1. boot system using ubuntu installation disk , opt try out ubuntu.
2. open computer places , click on hard drive icon mount , make accessible.
3. open terminal session applications/terminal , run "sudo gedit" (without quotes). open text editor empty file.
functionality of panel controlled settings in xml files in hidden .gconf folder in home folder. there many files called %gconf.xml , location determines content navigate appropriate xml file , change setting controls auto_hide feature.
4. click open button in gedit , press ctrl-h show hidden files.
5. navigate folder called:
.gconf/apps/panel/toplevels/top_panel_screen0
(nb - if have moved panel top bottom, still top_panel_screen0 folder.)
6. see file called %gconf.xml. click on it, click on open.
7. towards bottom of file, find entry name "auto_hide" contains line similar (the mtime entry different doesn't matter):
<entry name="auto_hide" mtime="1309447780" schema="/schemas/apps/panel/toplevels/auto_hide" type="bool" value="true"/>
change word "true" "false" , save file.
8. close gedit , reboot system.
in case, enough machine working state. can't provide support others trying solve problem solution "as is". if works you, fine. if not, please post other suggestions might others.
ubuntu 10.04 on old dell inspiron 2200 laptop
hugely helpful me, having same problem in 10.04 lts release.
written solution, relatively unsophisticated user missed important unstated direction. step 5 should have directed me open file directed, starting in home folder of user account had screwed autohide problem. obvious many, i'm sure, took me while figure out doing wrong.
in system, added new rescue user admin rights that, if again, can fix without needing boot cd.
