Thread: Please help me understand what this joker is talking about

i'm reading web page compiling linux kernel , guy says in there doesn't make sense me. can please me understand?

sounds he's making difference between kernel "source code" , kernel (as in downloaded file/ files) way talks both same. i'm confused!

it advisable install kernel source code comes distribution, because various guis automatically installed too. once done tarball newest linux kernel, e.g.,the file 'linux-2.4.6.tar.bz2' can downloaded . . .

reference: http://linuxfocus.org/english/july2002/article252.shtml
underline mine:

then, if 1 had "installed" "kernel sources code," why need "tarball newest linux kernel?" he's "installed" kernel, right?

irrespective if understand meant, page 9 years old. i'm sure can find more current instructions.

think meant exactly wrote; if install kernel source package comes distro, automatically install tools need in order compile kernel. note installing distro's kernel source package downloads source tarball distro's repositories , unpacks in /usr/src, not compile , install kernel. did only tools, not interested in distro's kernel, since there newer 1 available @ kernel.org.
continues talking replacing distro's source package newer 1 kernel.org, , how compile , install it.
