Making Changes To Indesign Book File?

when making changes indesign cs5 book file, should make changes in the book file or original individual document files, whole make book file?

 

forgive simplicity of question, when researched topic, have had differing answers.

 

if both possible, consequences of making changes either book file or document files?

my recommendation work book both possible.

 

book in indesign collection of documents , can work on document outside book or within book.

when make changes documents outside book see yellow exclamation mark in book panel infront of document name, on hovering mouse pointer on yellow exclamation , show reason document has been modified outside book.

 

so, better work book avoid such issues can missed there no big challenge or issue face if work cautiously.
