Thread: confusion after installation ubuntu! did i do it right??
past
had installed ubuntu 10.10 long back but never used due academical commitments. had installed ubuntu on separate partition of 20 gb. dont remember values had selected various partition , confused while installation!! somehow managed install , got while booting laptop!
apart home , desktop size less. remembered myself giving 6 gb swap (as considered swap important).
here when mount type in terminal!!
present
have downloaded new ubuntu 11.04 , want start on again totally formatting 20 gb hardisk created!! want keep @ least 30 gb new drive!!
can advice me sizes should used installation various file systems!! thanks!!
here are specs of laptop!!
you can reinstall current partitions if not want reformat.
not recommend separate /boot unless have old system boots first 137gb , can have of / (root) inside first 137gb in cases.
still dual booting windows. if recommend shared ntfs data partition data want in both.
otherwise current setup seems fine.
own 'best' partitioning plan gets old & obsolete after couple of years. depends on want do.
total space want ubuntu:
ubuntu's standard install / (root) & swap, better add partition /home:
1. 10-20 gb mountpoint / primary or logical beginning ext4(or ext3)
2. 2 gb mountpoint /home logical beginning ext4(or ext3)
3. 2 gb mountpoint swap logical
depending on how memory have may not absolutely need swap having still recommended. not hibernate (boots fast enough me) if hibernating need swap equal ram in gib not gb. , if dual booting windows shared ntfs partition recommended. cannot create part of install, leave space. or partition in advance (recommended).
1 advantage of partitioning in advance installer use swap space speed install. herman tip.
