Thread: Recommended Graphics card to work with Lucid 10.04
last month installed newer mobo + cpu , psu, (see system specs in signature) , moved maverick lucid 10.04.
running natty 11.04 64bit until couple of days ago, locking mad. did fresh install of 10.04 on whole hdd yesterday...though cannot recall asking me if wanted 32 or 64bit...will neeed check)
i'm using ati radeon (sapphire?) x1650 pro graphics card - borrowed friend previous card wouldn't fit in upgrade motherboard. ubuntu running quite fast stutters when on firefox or chrome. natty system lock @ least once hour, lucid - @ moment it's locked once in 6 hours... i'm assuming problems ubuntu , not card. no odd lines or colour on screen.
i'll need give card @ point... i'm wondering if people suggest other cards (nvidia/ati or other) known work happily ubuntu 10.04. i've got budget of around £40, i'm not gaming guess shouldn't need high spec. (my psu has pci-e connector if needed...though doubt be!)
use machine internet , photo editing (sometimes raw photo files,) playing music, bit of word processing , playing occasional dvd.

i'll give choice of 2 cards, 1 nvidia , 1 ati, both of i've used lucid, , both work well, , both of should come in under £40.
nvidia: geforce 8400gs. gives compiz nvidia proprietary driver.
ati: radeon hd4350. gives compiz default open source ati driver.
both of mine passively cooled , hence silent. if that's important you, should able find passively cooled versions.
way, both work natty/11.04 giving me compiz/unity proprietary nvidia , open source ati driver respectively. locking in natty saw might have been due graphics card, if either of ones i've suggested, give live natty cd run see if works better.
luck!
