Thread: Ubuntu is not recognising my graphics card

i know issue has been raised before, both here , on other websites , forums, keep running brick wall because can't understand responses (please excuse ignorance - i've few months' experience ubuntu).

ubuntu not appear recognising graphics card, galaxy geforce 8400gs 512mb ddr2 64-bit. run ubuntu 10.04 lts alongside windows 7 (dual boot) , first suspected not right when tried upgrade visual effects "none" "normal". ubuntu searches available drivers bombs out message, "desktop effects not enabled". videos "jittery" well.

hope can me , appreciate basic, step step instructions, particularly if have use terminal. thanks.

have tried system-->administration-->hardware drivers ?

should find nvidia proprietary driver 173 or 195 etc..
