Thread: Upgrade to 11.04 on ESXi 4.0 VM Grub issues

hi,

decided time go ahead , upgrade couple headless servers of mine 10.04 11.04. upgraded first 10.10 , 11.04. (just in case matters using vmxnet3 nic)

upgrade 10.10 went great. services still functioning etc. began path 11.04. once server reboot, grub started scream. unable find boot partition. "no such disk" error followed invalid mode: auto message

quite late last night searching answers , decided wait until morning post help.

below fdisk -l , contents of /dev/sda5 output. when mount /dev/sda5 see normal files. @ grub menu, however, when input
code:
root (hd0,4) setup (hd0)
i stage1 not found message! appreciated!

/dev/sda5

fdisk -l

grub menu ls

solved part of problem purging (not uninstalling) , installing grub2. used server disk in rescue mode. select /dev/[servername]/root partition. execute shell. no need chroot. mounted boot partition (in case /dev/sda5) /boot , ran

code:
apt-get purge grub grub-pc grub-common apt-get install grub-common grub-pc update-grub
and walla can past grub, @ blinking cursor!! funny thing is, services start can not interact console. thoughts? again headless server.
