Thread: Ubuntu server status

i use ubuntu on desktop , pleased see improvements in last couple of years. canonical created great bundles of open source software, easy use desktop users. created forums, wikis contain documentation makes software usable non geeks. best software worthless if don't know , how use it.

experience desktop, ubuntu server first choice little home server. should able host files users. that's basic didn't expect trouble. articles on net made me sceptical gave try. assumption nfs native file share mechanism should work out of box. make short, didn't work. , worst thing solutions far away users problem hurts.

user might want share storage or files between users. users should have access resources , might grouped easier maintenance.

didn't find unified user management, basic feature server. there documents describing bits , pieces can glue magic usable solution. that's still far away unified solution. have add user operating system, samba...

each dump router couple of $ has web user interface maintenance. there isn't such thing ubuntu server.

think it's time integrate services working solution combined user centric maintenance interface server.

i think there 1 major hole in logic. simplicity, in nature limits functionality.

take router mentioned example ; yes has graphical web front end management system. however, if @ router's capabilities are, realize there isn't can do.

when @ server application, whether web server, file server, domain controller, or else have realize going created possible functionality in mind.

let's @ samba instance. purpose relatively simple, sharing files. graphical user interface might seem intuitive. however, limiting scope of samba can basic @ point, user management , basic file sharing. if dig deeper , research server applications capable of find making gui front end them present user far more complicated interface if utilized command line. not counting fact want gui interface basic operating system features creating user account / home directory , etc on actual system.

still, there gui interfaces commonly used server applications, sure if google them find samba. however, notice if delve gui vs command line can offer find gui neuters functionality of underlying application.

think important realize functionality , ease of use not go hand in hand. part ubuntu simplifies many common tasks. however, once start delving world of networking in order maintain stability, security, , functionality large networks demand have shy away ease of use extent.

in reality while learning curve may seem little steep, rewards in mastering command line , actual methodology behind configuring, securing , maintaining own server far outweigh effort put understanding procedure in first place.
