Thread: Want Microsoft off my machine COMPLETELY; worried about losing things?

@ least fifth try @ writing this. i'm going take deep breath , try stay on track , off present feelings (deep breath) microsoft. oh, , ie. don't want dual boot (not sure can it; right i'm concentrating on file saving)

question is, have 6yr-old toshiba p25-607 media laptop came bundled windows xp media edition. i've used daily since husband bought me way best buy. know it's old, love , pc once. don't sell them anymore, they're still selling them used: http://bit.ly/meq6yu .

absolutely believe if can wipe clean, , ubuntu (not sure which), i'd have decent pc again. problem files screwed awful... there program scrub hard drive pictures, documents, kind of thing? , how it? (you can lie how - i'm worrier, , after few years, windows scatters crap on hard drive, paranoid)

once mind @ ease, i'll more haunting forum, because have absolutely no idea i'm doing. (well, have - i've been reading , trying learn as possible on past 4-5 months. if have advice in area, places learn, think important understand, etc, i'd love hear it.

btw, guys advanced, here in beginners forum - know great unwashed masses thought ubuntu programming language , firefox security software? well, that's me. have tell you, using opera , firefox past months, sooooooo shocked, i'm floored; got mess out of anger, trust me, i've been angry before , went back. times, didn't know there options - amazing options.

, fast. no freezing. no crashing. amazing. , free????? free. stunning. ive been donating fool on firefox extensions/add-ons, , still feels shoplifting!!

oh, , far, 8 people showed moms pc switched, thrilled ( did hers first, used disc other 7 ubuntu, i'm stuck complicated thumb drive boot.) call each other saying, holy sh** go link sent! guess calm down eventually, right feel kid in candy store.

what mean scrub hard drive? need make backup of files, pictures , such before install ubuntu? also, wouldn't recommend ubuntu computer. lubuntu lightweight alternative, should on low spec laptop.

basically, thing need backup personal files, burn lubuntu cd, stick in laptop , choose "use entire disk option". -that way, windows wiped off computer , you'll have lubuntu.
