How to mask circular or cylindrical 3D text with geometry & material options?

hello, guys, trying rotate text around planet in after effects cs6.

 

i making 1 basic assumption — please correct me if wrong. (i'm sure !) understand cannot have 2 3d objects (or in case, 2 2d objects 3d effects applied) in same "scene" (as called in photoshop.) in other words, cannot have planet , orbiting text in same layer, planet naturally masks out side of orbiting text. limited having planet on 1 layer , text on another, correct?

 

my goal: make shiny, reflective, extruded text, make goaround in circle text on side of circle masked out orbiting text appears disappearing behind planet.

 

ok, given above assumption correct, can see 2 ways this, (so far can tell) each method seems have advantages , disadvantages:

 

1. can apply cc cylinder effect text.

 

pros:

- effect has handy option render full cyclinder or outside or inside. chose outside want text appear rotate across front of planet.

- can add mask hide of remaining visible text when needed.

- built-in lighting controls.

 

con:

- no material options cannot add environment layer cool reflections going impress client. (yes, using ray-traced 3d renderer.)

 

 

2. can apply 3d rotate around circle animation preset text.

 

pro:

- have material , geometry options make cool reflections.

 

con:

- no "render outside" option , understand cannot add mask ray-traced layer. (correct?) suppose render 6 seconds video , mask footage layer, when front text right in front of text, complex mask have make.

that boring flat white text looks cut out of paper trying replace snazzier.

any ideas, suggestions? there other way achieve goal don't know yet?

 

i using latest version of after effects cs6 on 27" imac, running osx7.4.

hey carol.

i think solution give both results want , still relatively simple pull off use ae's text tool preset mentioned, , add animator text, controlling opacity of of layers.

just synchronize range selector of animator rotation of sentence, make letters fade in coming around curve, , fade out going back.

 

if absolutely must have splitting of "inside" , "outside", can try intersect white copy of 3d letters black solid along same plane globe is, resulting in white image of front letters, can use luma matte.

(you want condense alpha of white letters before intersection or you'll damage edges of letters after apply luma matte)
