Thread: Video playback choppy

this has been on-going problem i've had when trying watch video in linux. i'm going go ahead , state list of important points possibly rule out lot of things it's not. record, "choppy" mean noticeably low frame rate, in 30fps videos looking if discarding more half of frames.

*this happens in lots of distributions, not ubuntu.
*i have amd hd5850 , using latest proprietary drivers, problem exists older drivers too.
*i have desktop computer 4ghz processor, without type of speed stepping enabled.
*i can play 60fps 1080p video in windows without issues, in linux 360p choppy.
*problem happens both when using compiz , when using metacity or without compositing enabled.
*problem happens video player applications except flash videos played inside web browser.
*problem goes away if move mouse around on top of video player, come when stop.
*problem happens video formats , types of sources (internal hdd, external hdd, internet streams, etc)

working solution problem video playback in linux has been near impossible point current computer.

have same problem in ububtu 11.04. dvd playback jerky.

had no problem dvd play in ubuntu 10.10 (though took me 3 weeks , number of re-installs play dvds @ in 10.10 compared 1 hour in 11.04). not know codecs have installed in 11.04 or find them remove , re-install fresh ones.
