Samsung 830 SSD Mini Review
in last couple of weeks, posted upgrading disk subsystem. key motivator losing disk , of files. decided upgrade workstation's system disk samsung 256gb ssd, nice areca 1882ix raid card , disks. i'd "pay forward" great , feedback i've received. samsung 830 review first installment.
buying experience:
i bought samsung 830 @ newegg: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=n82e16820147135. overall i'm happy buying experience except auction style pricing methodology. when first looked @ 830, $250. couple days later, when bought it, $282. of writing (4:31 pm on 8/5/2012), $235! (arrrgh!)
lesson learned: if want buy egghead, watch price awhile. can save few <insert local currency here>.
installation:
overall, went smoothly these things go, there "gotchas":
- installing drive - drive packaged small tray supposed allow install 2.5" drive 3.5" drive bay. abysmal @#$@!%$ designed tray never tested creation see if work. drive sits in middle of drive tray flush bottom. there no way ever attach sata cable drive! off went local computer store buy one. $10 mediocre, plastic drive tray. it's $6 on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/rosewill-rx-c200p-plastic-mounting-drive/dp/b00558op9o/ref=pd_sxp_gr id_i_1_1.
lesson learned: prepared buy decent 2.5" 3.5" drive bay converter.
- hooking drive - planned attach drive marvell 6gb/s controller. hooked and... hmmm... nothing! after few minutes cruising through installation manual , online research, turns out 830 has hooked ahci or raid controller. , guess boys , girls, mine isn't 1 of those! attached intel 3 gb/s controller , voila... worked champ.
lesson learned: check mobo ensure that's compatible new drive. 830 compatible mobo, not @ speed wanted. oh well.
set , configuration:
overall went smoothly, that's because found excellent , detailed tutorial setting up, configuring, , optimizing ssd windows 7 system article: http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdd s.
one suggestion though... rebuild system instead of copying os old drive new ssd. it's pain install of apps. otoh, start fresh , installation times quicker old hard os drive (in case, 300gb wd 10k velociraptor - decent drive).
performance results:
even 3gb/s controller, results good. boot times 2 3 times faster, , apps photoshop , premiere pop in 5 seconds. not bad 2-1/2 year old system 12gb of memory. won't know how performs until add areca raid controller card , arrays, i'm happy far.
performance results:
i hope mini-review useful. i've missed lot of points. please ask , i'll respond experiences.
regards,
dan.
