Sound Cuts Out During Playback-Sound Card/Audio Interface Necessary?-
i'm voiceover artist following setup:
sennheiser mkh 416 p48 u3 microphone
yamaha hs80m reference monitors
mackie onyx-i 1220 mixer
adobe audition cs6
dell inspiron 1720 laptop (intel core2 duo, cpu t5750 @ 2ghz, 32-bit)
until recently, hear recorded or pre-recorded items no issues. however, now, listen anything, sound 'cuts out' (latency issues?). meters on audition still moving, i'll no sound monitors. upgraded windows 7, hoping , thinking solve issue, , audition play nicely windows 7. 'solution' seemed have helped, ultimately, did not resolve issue. @ point, believe it's sound card. studio quality setup seems consumer grade sound card. because mackie has interface built it, did not believe needed interface. however, i'm beginning question that. so, that's part of question. audio interface necessary me though have 1 built mackie? if so, based on list system, have recommendations interfaces? if not need interface, i'd appreciate suggestions or ideas what's causing sound 'cut out' , how resolve it. , help, thank in advance!

finally! wrote reply few hours fine folks @ adobe took site down before hit send! lucky saved elsewhere because "recovered post" first couple of paragraphs.
anyhow, take 2.
well, first off, mackie onyx mixer has firewire interface built in it, in effect, becomes sound card. 1 in computer isn't involved in recording/playback process @ (at least not unless you're trying monitor via computer card rather mixer). therefore, buying sound card/interface won't @ all.
similarly, audio dropouts aren't latency issue, @ least not directly. latency delay in audio round trip via sound interface (mixer) , computer. it's more of issue musicians trying beat accurate on dub tracks. however, latency controls affecting drop out problem. latency control in audition controlling buffer size--and having larger buffer (which increases latency) gives playback more protection against glitches when computer gets busy doing else. so...the first thing try increasing latency/buffer size on edit/preferences/audio hardware menu.
another thing check you're using latest drivers mackie--check site , download/install latest if there available. if there's choice, go asio drivers rather mme if there available.
also, mentioned computer getting busy other things--for serious sound work shut down else on computer. pay special attention networking, wifi, , anti virus software, of usualy prioritised grab processor cycles on sound work. make sure shut down system sounds.
hope @ least 1 of these suggestions works you.
