Thread: Call me crazy... What GUI for my Ubuntu Server???
yes know - ubuntu server doesn't have gui reason, it's server! hear you, think need i'll explain i'm hoping achieve , can tell me i'm crazy or work best.
aim...
a) each member of household has vm (or more) everyday use
* & backed-up , restored (read fixed/replaced)
* easy have several different purposes (keeping each light-weight)
* can run several @ same time (but obvious performance loss)
* same vm able accessed multiple locations (even remotely)
b) server...
* nice quad core 32gb ram [basic graphics, sound, etc]
* remain on ups , easy backups centrally & regularly
* acts domain controller, file & print server & hosts vms
* not have logged in
* load gui access vm & basic stuff (eg: file copy)
* still use shell other things
c) other pcs in house...
* can basic - need rdp - recommendations?
* potentially hosted on non-pc devices
* clients can boxes others throw away!
so... crazy or there suggestions or alternatives?
ps: initial experimentation has been xubuntu-desktop on ubuntu server , i've got domain, file, print & vm serving sorted, i'm ready start again minimalist approach. initial ideas "awesome" or "xmonad" or possibly "fluxbox" or "openbox" - done similar? traps?
pps: i'm not expert, i'm learning fast![]()
i know insist on using gui, can load vm's , manage them ubuntu machine without ever touching ubuntu server. can use hypervisor , remote management tool can software center.

may suggest use zentyal server? www.zentyal.com
comes gui , web interface manager it. makes setting pdc, mail server, vpn etc... easyy!!!!!!!! load , install virtualbox host vm's.
try out, wont dissapointed.
