Thread: How do I determine boot device number?

i'm running ubuntu (w/ grub) , windows xp. i'd remove ubuntu , run recovery on windows xp because has started not running correctly. computer 5 years old , figured i'd wipe clean , start on (read: remove ubuntu , reinstall windows via recovery console).

intend follow tutorial here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=508927

however, i'm confused determining boot device number windows. i've run "sudo fdisk -l" , can identify windows drive in list says:

device: /dev/sda1
boot: *
start: 1
end: 19352
blocks: 155444908+
id: 7
system: hpfs/ntfs

looking 7, 1, or different? first partition on list.

sda2 (id: c) fat32 drive. think recovery partition included on hp desktop.

sda3 (id:83) linux
sda4 (id: 82) swap

appreciated. need run fixmbr. (i hope right category)

the windows device number sda1. however, named differently grub. can convert "sda1" "hd0,0" (i.e. sda first drive, hd0; "1" first partition, ",0").

this link has more info on grub naming convention, can determine device numbers , names.
