Thread: Linux Ditro faster than Ubuntu

hi friends!! ubuntu user , have old computer. problem when watching movies, movie reproduces difficult, choked, faltering, , doesn't happen in windows.

don't know problem is. if problem codecs, recommend me codecs??

if problem distro. is, in opinion, faster linux distro? can play movies without stops?

1) make sure unneeded programmes turned off. programmes such compiz, transmission, , brosers running in background can consume lot of computer's resources, , make video viewing choppy. also, should turn off desktop effects (in appearances menu), these can severely slow down computer.

2) while full on distribution change may not necessary, if want snappier performance lower specs, consider 1 of lightweight *ubuntu releases. both xubuntu (which uses xfce instead of gnome), , lubuntu (which uses lxde) more lightweight, , run better on computers less ram or slower cpu. if you're feeling technical, *box window managers (like fluxbox, blackbox) more lightweight, can take technical expertise.

3) if ubuntu, , want go real lightweight, consider doing minimal install, installing xfce or lxde (or 1 of *boxes) overtop. minimal install installs barebones packages needed run ubuntu machine, meaning computer resource usage reduced further. again, semi technical.

4) if want full distro change lightweight as, check out puppy linux. it's designed use little resources possible (it can installed in ram!), meaning performance improved. mind you, full on distro change may bit extreme enhance video playback!

advice, start 1, if doesn't work liking consider 2, , on. technical options (2-4), if bit daunted process, post , here able run through decision involves, , guide through if want take plunge.
