Thread: Minecraft - 5 months of attempts, no hope?

so, i've been been attempting play minecraft, last 5 months or so; has never worked without crashing. contacted experts, couldn't figure out. can't quite tell if it's java problem or ati+ubuntu problem;

typing java -version in terminal comes with:

java version "1.6.0_20"
openjdk runtime environment (icedtea6 1.9.7) (6b20-1.9.7-0ubuntu1)
openjdk server vm (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode)

know minecraft support sun/oracle jvm, stated on website, every attempt install rather openjdk results in either catastrophic failure, or so-called "outdated java". uninstalled versions of java, did "sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk sun-java6-jre", checked java, , said above, have openjdk. however, when checking applications, appears have both.

people @ mojang's irc have told me problem ati drivers , ubuntu, likely, minecraft still crashes when right-clicking minecraft.jar , clicking "open sun java 6 runtime" rather opening openjdk. when running minecraft terminal, receive following error:

at point, i'll take random suggestions... i've struggled enough this.

well here comes random suggestion (untried) ...

install wine
install sun java 6 runtime through wine
run minecraft.jar in wine

work ???
