Cinematic film look (framerate & technique)


hi everyone,

 

still trying hands on creating cinematic film look. know there quite threads out there go way far in opinion installing kinds of plug-ins. want stick premiere pro's intrinsic options , have 2 questions:

 

1) seems me many of "amateur" tutorials out there focus on mixture of playing saturation levels , brightness via procamp , tweaking bit secondary color corrector. other tutorials seem done more professional editors (lynda.com, creative cow) seem focus on copying layers , tweaking blend modes shadows , highlights in opacity option. correct assume latter best/preferred way?

 

2) source material 1080i 25p. of course i've read lot fact framerate filmlook should 24p. easy using posterize time option on clip , setting 24p achieve result?

sebastiën, in experience 1 of best tools within premiere , ae mimic sort of cinematic cineon converter. think it's not meant , if apply default settings it's going horrible, few adjustments can cinematic.

 

needless say, achieve best have have proper monitoring card, example matrox mxo2 mini, connected @ least decent consumer tv set, or better yet professional broadcast monitor if can afford it, , make sure picture settings set default levels, , gimmicks dynamic contrast set off. better yet, can 1 of calibration blu-rays make sure it's calibrated. avs forum has nice avchd calibration disc free can download , burn simple dvd , play in hd, lots of color bars , need calibrate properly.

 

one apply cineon converter, these proper settings:

leave conversion type on log linear

set highlight rolloff 150

set gamma 5.00 (usually works, different footage might require different setting)

 

(you have adjust 2 above before else able adjust other settings properly)

 

10 bit black point: you'll have play setting depending on footage. best way set find part of footage dark areas , move setting in either direction until can barely see detail in dark areas, not high crush blacks.

 

internal black point: leave is.

 

10 bit white point: depends on footage, if footage dull, you'll have decrease (which makes picture brighter so), until highlights not overblown.

 

internal white point: leave is.

 

after this, might want add saturation filter if want more colorful look, or less colorful if prefer.
