How many fps are required to pull "action" stills from video?
i want crisp action stills (baseball, cycling, etc.) shooting video on dslr , pull still images during postproduction in lightroom 4.
questions:
- is possible without blurred stills?
- if so, how may fps dslr need capable of (60 fps?)
- any specific dslr camera recommendations?
- any suggestion or questions haven’t occurred me yet?
the problem using hd video you're limited hd resolution, 1920x1080 pixels (about 2 megapixels); on camera going 60 frames per second requires lowering frame dimensions to1280x720 pixels (about 0.92 megapixels). might ok if photos going web, otherwise it's low resolution still dslr. problem images heavily compressed, , can't raw.
also, frames per second not going there on own. still need high enough shutter speed. freeze action, shoot 1 frame per second long shutter speed fast enough stop motion. 1/60 of second slow freeze fast sports action, although might fine creating panning blur cycling , motorsports. you'll need tests find out shutter speed freezes action sports you're interested in, lenses use. high 1/500 of second. try manually setting dslr shutter speed in video mode, , whatever frame rate choose act sampling rate. chances are, when find out shutter speed need, better used in stills mode.
what sports photographers figure out action-stopping shutter speed, leave in stills mode able use megapixels camera can give them, set aperture , iso shutter speed, turn on high-speed burst mode, fire spray-and-pray burst, , dig best frame out of there. if raw burst frame rate slow, switch jpeg.
all slrs today can achieve shutter speeds necessary, trick getting enough light achieve without underexposure. you'll want camera has stills burst rate , capacity need (e.g., 15 frames @ 10fps) in format need (raw or jpeg), paired lens capable of large enough aperture shutter speed, , high iso performance give more achieve shutter speed in case lens aperture can't there on own. might pick more tips on sports shooter forums.
