Thread: Large log files I am unable to delete

ok have ubuntu 10.10 installed on 20gb partition. had issues partition full , ran out of space.

after investigating disk usage analyzer, found 13.5 gb of log files in /var/log

main offenders are:

ufw.log 3.0gb
messages 3.0gb
kern.log 3.0gb
syslog 1.3gb
kern.log.1 1.1gb
messages.1 1.1gb
ufw.log.1 1.1gb

here questions:
normal these files big?
safe delete them?
can set logging on these log until file reaches size purge older entries?
seem unable delete these files through file manager, need through terminal using "sudo"?

thank you,

i turn off iptables logging, reason logs growing big.

set preferences log log rotation in /etc/logrotate.conf

there no issue deleting logs.

delete ending in "log" or "1" without prompting:

code:
cd /var/log/ sudo \rm *log *1
