Thread: Can't play mkv files properly

i owned eee pc 900ha netbook installed ubuntu 10.04 , windows xp on separate partition...

i've been using ubuntu 2 years , thing is, still got problem since 9.10.

in windows, able play .mkv files playable on 480p not 720p. in ubuntu, have problem playing 480p mkv files , flv 480p. 720p out of question. default, it'll download codec used play mkv files when first time try run video.

have no problem playing other format (avi, ogg) on 480p or lower mkv, flv resolution. there reason why can't run on ubuntu rendered in windows?

i've try codec (mplayer, totem, vlc) still have problem running @ full speed.

it's files you're trying play include video encoded h.264 codec. highly-compressed format requires serious cpu power decode @ full-speed. 1.6 ghz atom processor in netbook isn't task. i'm not sure whether there's out there fix problem entirely.

i've used mencoder re-encode h.264 videos in matroska container xvid encodings in avi container when had machine without horsepower play 720p h.264 files. posting #4 in this thread provides code required if want go down path.
