Thread: File conversion gone bad

i had strangest experience transforming data windows home server ubuntu based fileserver.

situation:
2 hdd, both sata, both ntfs i'm faced task of converting them ext4 , not enough storage space keep 2 copies of

after research decide create ext4 partition, fill using ubuntu live cd (so files never leave drive, copied ntfs partition ext4 partition), , using gparted shrink ntfs partition smaller, add free space ext4 partition , copy new files in same way above. in end have ext4 drives.

, problem: lot of video files seem corrupt. can play them (all types of formats mkv, avi, dvds) after few minutes of playing programs shut off.

seek index of these files seems corrupted somehow.
further investigations: typical file 1.66 gb in windows ntfs , 1.1 gb in ext4. seems normal since working files 1.1 gb.

, after further research files come drive 1 corrupt, other files drive 2 play fine , copied in same manner.

sum up:

-only video files drive 1 affected (music , photos fine)
-file sizes seem correct, approximately same files drive 2

questions: have caused kind of behaviour? both drive same , treated same.

secondly: there way repair mkv files? avi files seem repairable, searches mkv repair tool have pointed project meteorite (meteorite.sourceforge.net/) doesn't work me (neither on windows or linux)

have run fsck on partition?
