Thread: Ubuntu 11.04 Failed to Boot Completely (no display)

i have been using ubuntu 11.04 since time released no problems until couple days ago. started computer , saw ubuntu flash through purple screen while booting, display went blank. still saw hard drive activity , after few minutes, heatsink fan started running louder since running distributed computing application puts cpu under full load. after few more minutes of black screen, hit reset button , system booted fine. happened again morning, except after 3rd attempt able desktop. backed important files, afraid turn off computer in case last time able log ubuntu. experimenting overclocking settings , system unstable last week, found stable settings , no longer freezes / crashes. i'm worried corrupted files while system unstable , crashed. once boot however, system stable , not crash. suspect maybe issue nvidia graphics driver using (running nvidia geforce 210 card). because small black rectangles appear on desktop, go away once move window on them...a small annoyance, figured driver quality issue. should do? there way file check on system files?

you can use check hard drive sees data ok. run on linux ext3 or ext4 partitions.

#from livecd unmounted,swap off if necessary, change sdb1 partition(s)
#e2fsck used check ext2/ext3/ext4 family of file systems.
sudo e2fsck -c0 -p -f -v /dev/sdb1
#if errors:
sudo e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sdb1

force reinstall of nvidia drivers - nvidia-current nvidia-settings in synaptic , run see if setting out of place.
sudo nvidia-xconfig
