Thread: home media network design

i’m designing , building home network share house. av tech running new cable throughout house not issue.

there 3 laptops, pc, potentially server (i’d need rebuild willing spend money there), 3 hdtvs, 2 xbox 360s , ps3. there modem/router, cisco 8 port 1000 base-t switch , cisco wap. /deep breath.

i’ve considered mythbuntu setup, don’t want spend money on 3 nice looking small media computers run front ends on. if possible put video cards (hd5450 cards $45 now) server , run 1 backend 3 frontends @ once, perhaps using vnc control playback, i’ll reconsider mythbuntu - suspect if possible, server’s cpu might balk @ decoding 3 video files simultaneously.

use 3 gaming consoles play files server, believe issue lays limited number codecs available on xbox/ps3 systems. correct me if wrong there.

i’m considering forgetting rebuilding server , spending money on kind of network storage solution, , using standalone media players (perhaps wdtv units) playback. away $5-600 up.

i’m asking here more ideas. i’m willing spend bit of money, , i’m willing put time building work well. i’m interested hear new purposes haven’t thought yet.

else possible, , think work best?

hmm... i'm having trouble picking out question in there. sounds want sort of media network running 3 tvs, correct? , don't have dedicated computers running tvs?
