Thread: question about upgrade with / on one drive and one for /home

hi ubuntu community:

installed ubuntu on new machine , used custom install to:

  • put operating system (/) on 1 drive, and
  • to put /home directory on different drive.

hard drive i've installed os on old mechanical hard drive, , i'll want replace ssd in few months.

when want replace mechanical drive ssd, wondered how it.

do custom install again, and
  • define 2 partitions on ssd (one / , 1 swap) - , check format box, and
  • define other hard drive have /home on it, but not check format box?

thanks!

i yes.

set second drive have mount point of /home , not mark format.

create 2 partitions on ssd , set mount point of / , /swap. ssd drive need formatting anyway. when os installs know /home located.

once converted /home folder /home partition os failed load because not find /home folder or configuration files in it. fresh install of os partition mounted / allowed pick /home partition = working os.

regards.
