Thread: Using SD Card as /Home, or an Extension of /Home?

i have installed ubuntu lucid lynx dual boot vista business on toshiba portégé r500. seems working great out of box, have problem available space on rather modest (but spectacular performance) 64gb ssd.

1) current partitions:

toshiba includes 3 partitions on new 64gb system, have added 1 primary linux container partition, enclosing 2 logical partitions.

- /dev/sda1 toshiba system volume: 1.6gb, partition type "unknown (0x27)
- /dev/sda2 windows vista business: 49gb, ntfs
- /dev/sda3 hddrecovery: 6.5gb, hidden hpfs/ntfs (0x17)
- /dev/sda4 linux container sda5 & sda6: 7.6gb, extended
- /dev/sda5 ubuntu filesystem: 6.6gb, ext4
- /dev/sda6 swap space: 1.0gb, linux swap

i'm sure i'll remove vista eventually, in meantime, (along ms office) requires whopping 32gb admire itself, after updates , security upgrades have been applied. shrunk partition 49gb leave space future updates , upgrades.

right now, ubuntu occupies 2.4gb of it's allocated partition, leaving 3.6gb free (i know, doesn't add 6.6gb, must gib vs. gb, ... or magic, maybe). swap 1.0gb, 2.0gb of ram, don't use hibernate.

2) installing /home on sd card

well, tried first, since have nice 8gb, class 10 sd card, , built in sd card reader. sd card inserted during installation, able select , designate /home, when tried restart after insallation complete, got error message before ubuntu login screen appear.

think happening doesn't mount when booting. it's not listed bootable device in bios, there toshiba bootable sd card utility included windows, needs bootable floppy or work. there must allows bios recognize floppy during boot, or whatever, toshiba utility isn't going work linux file system. puppy doesn't either puppy sfs saved user file (although work if copy them there manually, rather allow them save automatically).

3) extending /home sd card

thought i'd have copy stuff sd card manually, storage, when /home got crowded , cosy. noticed inserted sd card got added total space avaialable shown disk usage analyser accessory (which happened open @ time). see 10.8gb total, plenty start out me. assume because sd card had been formatted mount /home when first tried solution, , got recognized inserted in slot.

questions:

a) work? /home use space, or "pretending"?
b) there special might need do?
c) do 3 folders on sd card, put there during failed attempt install /home on card? (the third folder hidden: ".ecryptfs".)?
d) acceptable leave swap 1.0gb, since don't need hibernate?
e) else need consider?

aw dang!

thought going simple, guess gave bit tmi everyone, , of them fell asleep before reaching end of first post. let me try rephrase more simply:

1) can sd card install /home partition, using built-in sd card reader cannot used boot device?

2) how set sd card (using built-in sd card reader) as seamless extension of existing /home on hard drive? since hard drive bootable, don't error messages when doing way, space left on hard drive limited useful /home.

hear snoring time ...? ... hmmm ... nope! ... don't think ... maybe there still hope easy way this.
