importing into LR4

hello, have downloaded lr4 trial. i'm not sure yet if it's best way, have existing photo folders on hard drive, decided import there lr4 using 'add' methos, convert dng afterwards. wanted keep same file structure, , have photo's 'referenced' lr4

in martin evening's book states: 'the add option 1 suggest use here. "add" option telling lightroom "reference" files located on computer.'

when saw 'reference' word thought lr4 not 'take over' folder system. after importing 1 folder, realise although can view folders haven't yet imported lr4 nikon view nx software have been using capture nx2, view nx not read 1 folder have imported lr4.

this suggests me lr4 has indeed taken on file structure - can anyobe suggest should have done (i keep existing structure , open files in lr4 , other program wish). also, after have imported folders hard drive, might worth importing direct card. can give me basic pointers doing , keep same 'referenced file' structure.

i'm bit of novice, , although i'm sure martin evening's book experienced people, find doesn't make things easy understand myself - have order scott kelby's book , hope easier me

thank you

as understand it, add method not alter either folders or files. when lr makes new folders or renames them, 100% if had used operating system explorer / finder same thing - except, lr keep track of change, internal records.

however if have converted image files dng, may viewnx cannot read those. there particular reason doing that?
