Thread: Distressingly ancient system recovery

greetings all. apologises if sound bit newbieish - have little understanding of subsystems of computers.

switched ubuntu around 2 months ago, , have found wonderfully superior windows, had used until then. in time, have had 2 problems, each sufficient throw me of panic. first occurred month ago, when windows mysteriously hid ubuntu's root.disk. not realised (or knew meant) until rubi1200, on forum, enlightened me, , told me how fix (ie. find file , put swap.disk). , had been.

month later - - happened second time. doing when ubuntu crashed, , when rebooted seemed missing root.disk. time did not panic, but, remembering rubi1200's sage advice, booted windows, found root.file, , put in orthodox place.

partial success, however, when rebooted ubuntu of files last few weeks prove missing. - files, settings, etc - more primitive stage. this...is distressing, , curse myself yet again not more being more cautious in backing things up. time, said last time, never again foolish.

able provide hope, or explain happened? why restored first time, , version weeks ago saved second time? merely lost, irretrievable, timewarped? grateful suggestions.

this doesn't directly answer questions, have considered installing ubuntu on own partition? wubi install meant demo, , not permanent situation. could've been "hiccup" ntfs caused original problem.
